One of India’s most influential bridal designers, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, foresees a major transformation in Indian weddings, marking the decline of their traditional grandeur.

Renowned for dressing A-list celebrities like Isha Ambani, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, and Alia Bhatt, Mukherjee recently shared his perspective on the evolving wedding industry with Bloomberg. He remarked, “The wedding industry in India as we know it today is breathing its last,” following up his statement by pointing to the rise of conscious consumerism.

He noted a generational shift in priorities, where modern brides are moving away from brand-driven choices in favour of quality craftsmanship, stating that today’s consumers are “product supreme, not brand supreme.” This shift has impacted the bridal-wear market, including Sabyasachi itself, with traditional, heavily embellished designs losing ground to more understated, refined styles.

Expanding into Lifestyle

Mukherjee’s remarks come at a pivotal moment for his brand, which is undergoing a transformation—expanding beyond luxury bridal wear to embrace a broader lifestyle vision. The designer has always seen Sabyasachi as more than just a fashion house, stating, “I have never considered Sabyasachi to be a fashion brand; it’s a lifestyle brand.” This philosophy is evident in the brand’s past ventures, from a homeware collaboration with Thomas Goode to a partnership with H&M on casual wear, reflecting its evolving identity beyond couture.

Looking ahead, Mukherjee is set to expand his jewellery collection, which already accounts for approximately a quarter of his revenue. He is poised to surpass his apparel sales. Recent designs have reached beyond India, as seen at this year's 97th Academy Awards on Goldie Hawn and Bela Bajaria. Additionally, his brand will launch perfume and beauty products within the year. Further cementing its lifestyle positioning, Mukherjee plans to extend his wallpaper and furnishings line into home and hotel design.

From the diminishing grandeur of scale to the rise of minimalist colour palettes and refined silhouettes, Indian weddings have undergone a noticeable transformation in recent years—a shift that is set to continue. As Indian bridal fashion evolves, Mukherjee’s vision reflects a broader movement towards a more holistic approach to luxury—one that extends beyond the wedding day and seamlessly integrates into everyday living.
